Know more about our environmental and social footprint impact score of our products.
One overall score to help you choose the right products.
To help you make more sustainable choices, we've developed an environmental scoring system.
The "Overall Environmental Impact" score is based on a L'Oréal Group scoring methodology that gives an accurate vision of the impact of a product by taking into account 14 planetary impact factors1, such as greenhouse gas emissions, water scarcity, ocean acidification or the impact on biodiversity.
The impacts are measured at every stage of product's life cycle and calculated by looking not only at sourcing, production and transportation, but also consumer usage and packaging recyclability.
1Carbon, waterscarcity, freshwater ecotoxicity, freshwater eutraphication, marine eutraphication, water acidification, fossil and mineral ressources depletion, land transformation, terrestrial eutraphication, particulate matter, toxicity via environment, ionizing radiation, ozone depletion, and photochemical formation.
Discover our methodology
This environmental impact labelling methodology was developed by the L'Oréal Group with the help of 11 independent scientific experts and is aligned with the European "Environmental Product Footprint" standards that aim to reduce the environmental impact of goods and services with a multi-criteria approach.
This calculation methodology was developed by the L'Oréal group with 11 indepedent scientific experts and is aligned with the European "Environmental Product Footprint" (PEF) standards. The application of the impact calculation method and the accuracy of the data are verified by independent auditor Bureau Veritas.
Where to find the environmental score ?
Each product's environmental score is indicated on the product information section of the website, right after the ingredient list.
In this section you will also find more information about the product's manufacturing conditions, packaging, and social impact, to name few.
We've also chosen to highlight the carbon and water footprint of our products.
These two impact factors represent over 90% of the overall environmental impact of L'Oréal Professionnel products.
WHAT DOES "CARBON FOOTPRINT" MEAN ?
Carbon footprint refers to the quantiry of greenhouse gas (CO2) emitted throughout the product's life cycle: ingredient sourcing, packaging, production, transportation, consumer usage and recyclability, to name few.
WHAT DOES "WATER FOOTPRINT" MEAN ?
This refers to the quantity of water consumed throughout a product's life cycle. It takes into account the water required for ingredient sourcing, packaging, formula production, the water required to rinse out our products, and the water needed to process the resulting grey water. For L'oréal professionnel, water footprint represents over 75% of the overall environmental impact.

WASTE RECOVERY
Waste from manufacturing is either reused, recycled or transformed into energy (waste-to-energy).
In order to avoid sending waste to a landfill, materials that cannot ne reused or recycled are used as fuel in special furnaces to generate energy.
